Thistle Bird Feeders Bring Finches to Your Garden
If you are looking for a great way to attract finches into your garden, try using thistle bird feeders, which hold thistle seed. These are typically tube bird feeders and offer very short rods for perching while holding larger birds at bay. You can also find these feeders in varying sizes. The holes on this type of feeder are extremely small in order to limit the amount of seed that is wasted by the birds.
While finches are beautiful birds to have in your garden, I recommend having one or two of these feeders but not making every feeder in your garden a thistle feeder. For one reason, these particular feeders are rather high maintenance and should be cleaned at the very least once a month with a preference for every two weeks in order to avoid making the birds sick or somehow tainting their food supply.
The good news for those who have gone more than their share of rounds with squirrels stealing the food from bird feeders is that squirrels do not like thistle. This means that you will not have that particular concern when filling your feeders in hopes of attracting beautiful finches to your garden. If you have dealt with this problem before you realize just how large of a concern squirrels can be when it comes to invading your garden.
There are a few decorative thistle bird feeders on the market though you really must search far and wide in order to find them. There are also some rather large thistle seed feeders that have an extremely large capacity. If you are going to be cleaning your feeder regularly, as you should, and do not have a vast population of finches hanging out in your garden as of yet, it will really be a waste to have that much seed in your feeder as it will need to be cleaned out.
Thistle bird feeders would prove difficult if you were making your own; however, their price is not too terribly prohibitive. If you are looking for a great addition to your garden that will attract some lovely birds without attracting a few new squirrels into the mix, thistle bird feeders are an excellent choice. Beyond finches, that thistle bird feeders are known to attract, these feeders are often known to attract chickadees and nuthatches as well.
In addition to the tube bird feeders that are well known to be good sources of thistle, there are many different types of thistle sacks and pouches that hold thistle and have small holes that are simply perfect for finches to reach in and take. These pouches are one of the few thistle bird feeders that can be made or decorated by craft lovers and favorite grandchildren across the country. The bags and pouches that contain the seed can be painted in order to bring a little touch of color into your garden. These make excellent gifts and are refillable so that they may be used year after year in order to bring enjoyment and beautiful birds to your garden season after season.
If you enjoy birds such as finches, chickadees, and nuthatches then you should be delighted to know that there are many bird feeders on the market such as thistle bird feeders that hold seed that is meant to entice these birds into your garden. The specific feeders that are often used for thistle serve as deterrents to many of the more aggressive birds that tend to frighten these beautiful creatures away. You should try to include at least a couple of thistle bird feeders in your garden if you have the opportunity.
