Are you in a Skunk Funk?

Living in the country does tend to make for some strange and often smelly neighbors…though I guess this could happen in the city too. Well I am a dog owner with a few acres of land and they run patrol on a regular basis and I also happen to have a den of skunks that live on the far end. There is nothing quite like the joy of seeing a dog that weighs 170 pounds come rushing up over the dam to the pond and literally dives in the water and sticks his head underwater while his 15 pound Terrier buddy runs to the mud and rolls until he has a 2 inch coat of red clay. This is the first hint that something isn’t just right with the world…then a soft breeze from that direction suddenly causes tears in your eyes and you just want to retch at the intense smell. AHHHH SKUNK nothing quite like it.
Now there are several different mythical solutions for being rid of this odor…I grew up with go buy a case of tomato juice and soak em down in it, then when they are damp they smell like a citrus skunk, really doesn’t help much but will at least get them to where there are no longer tears in your eyes. Or you could call your groomer and let them take care of the problem with one of the more exotic soaps designed just for this purpose of destenching or you could even purchase that soap yourself, though I haven’t had much luck with them. Well I have discovered the ultimate destenching mix…it will kill the odor of anything and can be used on anything too…so if you get lucky and get skunked yourself while cleaning up your dogs you can use this to deodorize your clothes and yourself too. This solution actually works great on anything that has a bad smell and it is so simple, and you can use it on anything.
The only warning I am going to give here…is absolutely do not get in the your eyes or your pets the hydrogen peroxide can cause blindness so be careful about that…I just use a washcloth if they been sprayed in the face, it works great. Oh and this is almost instant in making the smell stop within seconds your eyes will stop tearing.
NOW for the MIRACLE CURE for De SKUNKING!
- Quarter box of Baking Soda ( you can use more if you want but not necessary)
- a regular size bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide ( like you can buy at the dollar store)
- 2 Tablespoons of Dawn Dish Washing Liquid
- Gallon of Warm water
Now mix this all up together and use it immediately, I use a wash cloth to scrub around the face with, but you can use a cup and work it into their coats, and I have found that it is recommended that you leave it on for about 10 minutes then rinse. Now your pet will be more than tolerable to be around and if you got the skunk oil on your clothes this same mix will get rid of any lingering odor. Now usually one good bath in this solution works though not always, so don’t hesitate to do it again just make sure you get them well rinsed and remember to not get it in their eyes.
Now a fear of using this…is will it bleach out my dog…the answer is no, my dog is black and never had a problem using this even in full sun so I could douse him with the water hose. This also works on just plain smelly dogs too. Another great aspect of this solution is it will get the breeds wet that are considered water dogs, like Labrador retrievers, the Dawn will get them wet so you can get them clean super quick!
