Platform bird feeders are quite easy to make if you are of the mind and enjoy this type of crafty project. It’s actually a great gift idea for little ones to make and give to bird watching relatives on your Christmas list. You can find free patterns and design ideas for platform bird feeders readily online and if you want to make the gift extra special you can add some great goodies to feed the birds as well. Nuts and fruits are great goody ideas for not only the feeder but also the person to whom you are giving the feeder as a gift.
If you prefer, of course, you can make platform bird feeders for your very own backyard. Many people find them to be rather plain but I find that with a little paint, a couple of small hands, and a good deal of creativity you can turn your feeder into a work of art fit for the king of birds to feed. These feeders are attractive options for those who want to attract a wide variety of birds to their yard but do not want the hassle of multiple feeders in order to do so. You will find that smaller birds that are inclined to perch will be attracted to your platform feeder just as larger ground feeding birds.
You will also find that the possibilities, when it comes to feed types in these feeders, are virtually limitless. From fresh fruit, nuts, and bread, to seed and suet you can place all kinds of food within these feeders making them an attractive choice for bird lovers of all kinds. Each of these foods will attract a different type of bird to your feeder bringing a wide variety of choice and viewing for your pleasure each and every day that you have food in your feeder. Be sure to have a decent source for fresh water close by as well in order to keep the birds coming back for more.
There are a couple of options for placement of platform bird feeders as well. While some prefer to hang them from tree limbs or posts there are others that prefer using their posts as a stand for these feeders. This is larger a matter of preference and the amount of space and reachable branches you have access to. Either makes a lovely addition to your garden and brings the wildlife a little closer to your front (or back) door.
If this is your first experience with bird feeders and bird watching, I highly recommend this is a tool for inviting the largest selection of birds to your little corner of the world. Once you’ve identified the types of birds you like most you can then begin offering foods and building (or purchasing) feeders that are designed specifically to attract the birds of choice. Platform bird feeders are the perfect tool for learning about birds, bird watching, and the feeding habits or birds that are indigenous to your area as well as those that migrate through your area during various times of year.
