Stellar’s Jay (Cyanocitta Stelleri)
The Stellar’s Jay is a conspicuous, crested jay that adapts readily to people, and is well known in parks and picnic areas. It is also often seen at bird feeders.
The Stellar’s Jay is related in appearance to the Blue Jay, but with a black head and upper body. The only white on its body is in its tiny white eyebrows. Males
and females look the same. The Stellar’s Jay lives only on the west side of the Rocky Mountains.
The Stellar’s Jay feeds on nuts, acorns, seeds, insects, berries, eggs and young chicks. They will also scavenge meat off animal carcasses. The will often hide excess food in the soil or in cracks in trees for consumption when food is scarce.
Stellar’s Jays have many vocalizations, Including “shaaak shaaak”,”wek” and “wah” calls. They are also good mimics and imitate other animals including squirrels and hawks.
The Stellar’s Jay is the provincial bird of British Columbia.
