Suet Bird Feeders

Suet is also a great energy source for birds in the winter helping them to keep warm against the cold winds. Also birds bring bright flashes of color into the drab winter landscape.
If you have a bird watcher in the family or children that are fascinated by small birds you just might find that suet bird feeders make an excellent center of entertainment for your lawn and garden. If you are the one who is a bird lover you can do even more for your suet bird feeders by making your own suet. There are dozens of pages online that are dedicated to creating recipes that are guaranteed to entice certain indigenous birds to your backyard paradise. Simple feeders can even be made out of pine cones.
Woodpeckers are yet another bird that is attracted to suet. If you have a suet bird feeder near a favorite tree or wooden post you just might want to make sure that you keep it steadily supplied unless you want to wake up to reminders of long forgotten morning cartoons. There are suet feeders that are designed specifically with woodpeckers in mind. If this is the bird you are hoping to attract there are many great recipes that are said to be well loved by woodpeckers.
Starlings are birds that seem to have a specific fondness for suet and one of the reasons that those suet bird feeders with the roofs have been created (specifically to keep starlings from eating all the suet). If you are creating your own suet bird feeders and wish to keep starlings from stealing all the goodies make sure that the ‘cage’ is set up so that it can only be approached from below.
Unfortunately, birds, and starlings aren’t the only things that enjoy suet. It is a particular favorite among squirrels. If you are hoping to keep the squirrels away you can try protecting your feeders with baffles though this is not even a guarantee. Sometimes, squirrels are the price you pay for creating an environment that is favorable and attractive to your favorite birds.
You can find suet bird feeders in many shapes and designs. You can even find the plans necessary to create your very own suet bird feeder if you are the type to enjoy a do it yourself project along these lines or simply would like something such as this to do with your children. There are many sources online where you can obtain free patterns for creating your own suet bird feeders or patterns that charge a nominal fee for the service. I recommend finding one that best suits the skill level of all involved (particularly if you will be building one with your children) and that you find aesthetically pleasing.
Suet bird feeders are excellent tools for bringing the birds that so many enjoy into your backyard and providing a sanctuary of sorts for the animals you bring in. If you are creating your own feeder make sure you enjoy the project as that will only serve to enhance your enjoyment of your time outdoors watching the birds dine on the your creation. Be sure to try out as many different recipes as possible in order to discover which recipes attract which birds to your suet bird feeders.
