Digging a Pond
Oct 1st, 2007 by Jasper
I hired a bulldozer to dig my pond and ran into problems…now I am trying to solve those problems along the way I will share my attempts at various solutions. I initially was going to have a couple of tons of bentenite, {which is a form of really hydrophillic clay that will expand and make a tight bottom}disc into the pond to help seal it but mother nature immediately tried to fill my pond with a huge storm and it has not been dry since then but it has never been totally full either. I have huge rocks in the dam and I have a seeping leak which has caused cat tails to grow on the back side of my dam. There is a huge rock in the pond that the bull dozer just crashed into, needless to say it is still there then on two edges I have shelving rocks so my leak could be anywhere.
Well my pond is something I have always wanted and it even has fish in it now though this summer’s drought I wondered if I would just have a large hole left on the hill side, the pond is the lowest it has ever been but the fish are still thriving.I am taking this opportunity now……with the banks so exposed to try and do a repair so to speak that might just seal the pond besides making it more beautiful. As I go along I will share all that I am doing, my successes as well as my failures and I will even throw in some pictures for you to follow along. So welcome to trying to make a pond work.
